Where is Croatia?
Croatia is a relatively small country with a population of about 3.8 million people. The country is located on the
crossroads of Central and Southern Europe. It has a natural sea border with Italy and a land border with Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. The capital of Croatia and the largest city is
Zagreb, whose
Christmas market has been declared as the best one in Europe multiple times. Zagreb is one of Croatia's urban centers and an ideal destination for a short city break.
What languages are spoken?
The official language is
Croatian, but you will be able to communicate in English with a large part of the population. A big part of the population by the sea also speaks Italian and some German.
In which time zone is Croatia?
Croatia has only one time zone and it is the
Central European Time Zone (CET).
What regions does Croatia consist of?
Croatia is usually divided into
continental Croatia, which encompasses the interior, and the
Adriatic coastline. The coastline is divided into three major regions: the
Istrian peninsula,
Kvarner Bay and
Dalmatia.
What is the climate like?
Continental climate is found in the interior, while
Mediterranean climate prevails on the coast. Summers by the sea are very warm and dry, often with temperatures above 30°C, while winters are mild and rainy. The sea is the warmest in August, although it is suitable for swimming the entire summer long. Continental Croatia has warm summers and colder winters, while a mountain climate with cool summers and snowy winters prevails in the mountains. If you are planning a trip and stay in a
villa with pool in Croatia, the summer (from June until September) is ideal for enjoying the coast. Spring and autumn are perfect if you prefer a more active holiday and exploration, whereas winters are the perfect choice to relax in the mountains or to experience the Christmas market in Zagreb. 😊
How can I pay in Croatia?
The official currency in Croatia is the
Euro (€). Payments are most often made with a credit card or in cash. However, we advise against relying solely on card payments, as it is still common practice in smaller towns and villages to accept only payments in cash. While you can easily find ATMs in bigger towns and cities and exchange money in banks, exchange offices or at the airport, it is better to always have a couple of euros with you for unexpected payments.
What are the main emergency phone numbers?
You will find a list of important
emergency numbers below. We recommend to save them in your phone and to print them out and keep in an easily accessible place during your stay.
-
- 112 - common number for emergency services (police, firefighters, emergency medical services...)
- 192 - police
- 193 - firefighters
- 194 - emergency medical services
- 195 - sea rescue
- 1987 - roadside assistance (HAK)

What documents are needed to enter Croatia?
Croatia has been a member of the
European Union since 2013 and from January 1st 2023 a member of the Schengen area. However, you still need to bring the
personal documents or passport for all travel members (yes, even for babies). If you are staying in a
villa with private pool in Croatia, your host will need to see and copy your personal information to register you with the Tourist Board. This is required by law. The tourist tax is already included in the price, if you have booked your accommodation with us. 😊 We recommend that you check in advance weather you need a visa to enter the country, which you can verify on the official webpage of
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
